High potential and gifted education
At Campsie Public School, we are committed to engaging every student across the intellectual, creative, social-emotional, and physical domains of learning. We strive to nurture each student’s potential by providing meaningful opportunities for talent development and personal growth.
Our High Potential and Gifted Education framework has been thoughtfully developed to align with the NSW Department of Education’s policy. It ensures we identify, support, and extend the capabilities of high potential and gifted students across all areas of learning.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Selection Process for the Selective Class
Campsie Public School has established selective classes in both Stage 2 (Years 3–4) and Stage 3 (Years 5–6) to meet the learning needs of high potential and gifted students. These classes provide a tailored, enriched learning environment that supports academic challenge, creativity, and personal growth.
In alignment with this principle, priority for placement is given to students who are:
-
Identified as highly gifted
-
Identified as high potential or gifted with additional needs, including:
- Students with disability
- Students from low socio-economic backgrounds
- Students from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander backgrounds
- Students newly arrived in Australia or with a refugee background
- Students identified as at risk
Placement decisions are made using multiple data sources, including:
- Student achievement data over time (e.g. NAPLAN, Check-in, PAT, ICAS, off-level testing, and teacher assessments)
- Teacher nominations using the HPGE Referral Form
- AGAT (General Ability Test) results
- Cognitive assessments, where available
Importantly, all students at Campsie Public School - regardless of selective class placement - are provided with rich learning experiences, differentiated instruction, and opportunities to develop their potential. Our school is committed to ensuring every learner is challenged, supported, and empowered to grow across all domains.
How We Support High Potential & Gifted Students
At Campsie Public School, we are committed to ensuring that high potential and gifted students from all backgrounds have equitable access to high-quality learning opportunities that meet their individual needs and aspirations. Our approach is grounded in evidence-based talent development, designed to optimise student growth, engagement, and achievement. We implement a multi-tiered system of support to provide targeted programs and provisions that extend and enrich the learning of all students.
Tier 1 – Universal Support
Evidence-informed instruction delivered to all students in the classroom. This includes high-quality teaching practices that promote engagement, challenge, and growth across all domains of learning.
Tier 2 – Targeted Support
Strategically targeted instruction for students who require additional challenge or extension beyond Tier 1. This may include small group enrichment, subject acceleration, or specialised programs.
Tier 3 – Intensive and Individualised Support
Highly individualised adjustments designed to meet the specific needs of students with exceptional potential. This may involve personalised learning plans, mentorships, or curriculum compacting. Tier 3 support is provided in addition to Tier 1 and Tier 2.
